Dr. Tom Fowlkes has been an Emergency Physician for over 20 years. He is a native of Clarksdale, MS and went to med school at The University of Tennessee in Memphis. He received The Faculty Medal for the highest GPA in his medical school class and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as Chief Resident. He is a Board Certified Emergency Physician.
Dr. Fowlkes has lived in Oxford since 1996 and has worked in a variety of practice settings including the ER, urgent care centers, Ole Miss student health center and Harrah’s employee health clinic. Since 1998 he has been the medical director for the Lafayette County Detention Center and for the past two years has also been the medical director of Communicare’s Haven House detox and drug/alcohol treatment center.
Dr. Fowlkes has always enjoyed using his diagnostic skills. He believes that by carefully listening to and examining the patient many unnecessary tests can be avoided. He also believes that often patients are prescribed medications which they cannot afford resulting in treatment failures. Many times, a less expensive alternative would have been just as effective.
Dr. Fowlkes tries to respect the dignity of every human being. He believes that the treatment relationship is a private matter between the patient and physician. He believes that patients should be charged a fair & reasonable price for his services and that in return they will be willing to pay for his expertise.
